This news just in:
Air passengers could face a fresh surcharge on tickets to pay for the escalating price of airport security.

So what they are saying is that I now need to pay for the right to be treated like a man under arrest, harassed and then have everything I own lost while facing delays and cancellations while the people who are charging me for this dubious right by-pass the same humiliation.
All this in the name of a truly dubious idea that no right thinking terrorist would actually consider.
I have to pay for the right to be harassed so that something that wouldn't work can not be attempted by people who couldn't make it work.
I'd much rather travel on the eurostar and catch my flight from a French or Belgum airport. If only out of principle.

Assuming of course, that you can, given the semipermanent industrial action by French air-traffic controllers"
Yes, it does seem rather bizarre that anyone should pay for the privilege of being treated like that.
Steg, good point! Our French cousins do like to stand up for their employment rights don't they LOL
Maybe a ferry to Holland would be a better option.
Does anybody else wonder about the safety of international travel full stop ie on trains, ferries etc? Oh and things might be about to get worse, in terms of the farce that is the current security situation, the baggage handlers at stansted are planning to go on strike next weekend, if this occurs it is very likely that the airport will be closed. Pippa
Pippa, I have wondered about the safety of other forms of transport, more trains and buses than ferries, although I suppose they could be vulnerable to certain types of attack too. But with the other two there aren't the checks about who gets on board so they could be seen as a soft target. Having said that, I don't exactly sit and fret every time I catch the bus.
How often do the baggage handlers at Stansted go on strike - it seems to be every other month. They are starting to resemble British Leyland in the 70s!
